Neurology Self-Portrait
A meeting of the minds
The brain is a complex and enigmatic organ. By comparing structures across species, we can better understand our own cognition and connect with our neighbors on the tree of life. Here, I illustrated the brains of a human (Homo sapiens) and Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni).
Anatomical accuracy was reviewed by Kristy Cheung, anatomist and neuroscience PhD candidate at the University of Toronto. Preliminary sketches of the human brain were drawn from life in Grant’s Museum. Initial tortoise brain references came from T. R. Jones’s General outline of the organization of the animal kingdom and manual of comparative anatomy (1841).
