Collaborative Neuroanatomical Textbook Spread

Parallel Thinking:

Illustrating the Brain as a Team

This two-part project gave me the opportunity to work together with my MScBMC colleagues, fostering collaborative thinking and accountability. I was tasked with composing a neuroscience textbook spread, requiring research, writing, and a contour drawing. I then passed the draft on to a fellow student, who was responsible for fully rendering the illustration, imparting it with vibrancy and visual clarity. In turn, I rendered a spread from one of my teammates.

In the first stage, I produced a spread outlining the Trigeminal nerve—the most intricate cranial nerve. The linework, content, and layout presented a formidable challenge, compelling me to reflect on the way I study and conceptualize anatomy. Ultimately, I employed a “roadmap” with arrows that mimic the actual layout of the nerve’s numerous branches.

After undergoing artful rendering from my talented classmate, Juno Shemano, this piece was selected to receive the Steve Gilbert Award for Artistic Excellence in Biomedical Visualization. See the final render on her website here.

For the project’s second phase, I rendered diagrams depicting the superficial and deep venous drainage of the brain, as well as a layered diagram of cranial tissues. The initial contour drawing was artfully composed by Vadym Lytvynov, M.D.
