Illustrating a natural phenomenon
This assignment challenged students to create approachable and appealing graphics to explain a biological phenomenon. Keeping fish has been a hobby of mine for 10 years; I always jump at the opportunity to illustrate something aquatic.
Sockeye salmon are a keystone species that uphold the health and balance of Pacific Northwestern ecosystems. During their migration season, thousands of fish swim over 2,000 miles upstream from the ocean to their birthplace to breed. This infographic illustrates sockeye salmons’ range, behavior, and biology during this critical culmination of their life cycle.
The mechanics of salmon migration are still poorly understood. With climate change and habitat destruction threatening their journey, human intervention is necessary to preserve the species and their environment. Animals that receive the most media attention typically also receive the best conservation care. Consequently, this poster aims to explain the wonders and mysteries of sockeye migration to the general public so these remarkable fish can be preserved and enjoyed for generations to come.
